The museum that is somebody’s house

Walking the upper lanes of Turtuk village

Two families in Turtuk turned their homes into museums. No curator, no grant, no wall text. Just an entrance fee, a family member walking you through, and objects that are still, technically, in use in the house around you.

The obvious reading is that this is tourism-driven heritage-making, and that reading is not wrong exactly. It just misses the order events happened in. The collecting started before the visitors did. What tourism supplied wasn’t the motive. It supplied a vocabulary, a way of describing something the family was already doing, in terms an outsider would recognise and pay for.
