A room full of metal

Oral history session, Turtuk — household metalware and memory

Every Balti kitchen I’ve sat in has a wall of copper and pewter that nobody uses. Tea comes out of a steel flask instead. The samovar on the top shelf hasn’t held water in a decade, probably longer. And yet the shelf gets dusted. The arrangement is deliberate. Ask about any single vessel and someone will tell you exactly which grandmother it came with, and which side of the line she was on.

The wall, I’ve come to think, is a genealogy you can look at. In a place where talking about pre-1971 kinship can get delicate fast, the metal does the remembering instead. It’s the safest archive in the house, precisely because nobody has to say anything out loud to keep it.
